So I step into the train after a long tiring day to go home, looking forward to enjoy the weekend. I sat at the window seat and started listening to music and dozed off. The train stopped at Mahim station,Mumbai and out of nowhere a man from the platform spits an entire 'PAAN' on me through the window. I tried reaching the door to catch hold of him but unfortunately the train had moved forward and gained speed. My face, hands, neck; almost entire body was covered with the disgusting man's dirty saliva, bacteria, germs, senselessness, ill mannerism etc etc. I don't think it was accidental because no one spits straight forward, usually the person at least turns his head diagonally downward. Spitting is supposed to be fined. I don't know how will this ever happen in a country like India where people disrespect their country and spit anywhere.

Name – Kishan Kumar. He has been doing Hindi typing for 35-yrs outside General Post Office(GPO), Lucknow. 

Working 10 hours a day on his old typewriter, which cost him Rs 5000, he used to get 50Rs per day. But he could never imagine that the typewriter which earned him his bread and butter could not take a kick from a sick policeman.

After the first blow he collected the parts and put it back together, and begged for mercy as he was cursed with the sin called ‘Poverty’. But the shining stars on the shoulders of the police officer were so bright that they blinded him and he couldn’t see the shine of stars dripping down the poor man’s eyes. He snatched the typewriter from the poor man with his powerful arms and threw it smashing it into pieces. It shattered with the dreams of poor man.

65-year-old Krishna Kumar started collecting his dream wrapped in pieces of that typewriter. But every part of it cried like him, not able to get together. When we asked him now what was he going to do, he turned towards us, eyes filled with water and flowing pieces of dreams in it, and said that he had been doing that job for the past 35 years. He has seen the world change before his eyes; maybe it was time to change himself. Now Hindi was no more needed for the country like his old typewriter. He kept looking at the pieces of the typewriter with the shattered dreams in his eyes.

Many people have come forward to help the old person. The Cop has been suspended just a few hours back.

Purple Skies –When One Stretches the Wings to Fly

IPC 377 was a part of the British colonial legacy in India. It was introduced in 1860 and reads thus:
Unnatural offenses: Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Explanation: A section of men and women, lesbians, gays, transgender, and bisexual, who had been a part of Indian culture from time immemorial, were declared as “criminals”, literally with a stroke of pen.

The pain, trauma, hope and happiness of this minor yet large LGBT community of India have been explored in “Purple Skies”, a documentary directed by Sridhar Rangyan. He had been commissioned by the Public Service Broadcasting Trust to uncover the lives of this community and to offer a glimpse of violence they suffer, physically and more poignantly, emotionally on a daily basis throughout their lives. A lot of times they have to “pay the cost of their coming out” with their lives.

The documentary was made from a series of interviews between 2008, when Delhi High Court read down section 377 of Indian Penal Code (thus decriminalizing homosexuality) and 2013, when Supreme Court dismissed the High Court’s ruling. It made its debut at KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, and has been screened at 27 international film festivals.

Watch this small video which gives a bird’s eye-view of the documentary. We can think for ourselves if it is human to deny a section of people, however minor, to such shame, humiliation, physical and mental torture, rapes, police custody, or drive them to suicide, for the “sin” of loving someone of the same sex, or for having a body gifted to them by God.
