While the other page 3 crime drama running on the news channels is overflowing with the details of the who did it to whom with some hundred odd suspects thrown in the chronological order, there is a parallel horror story unfolding where nobody has moved beyond the opening credits and 90% of the people aware of the case are not aware of the name of the chief accused!
The Silence of the Ministry of the External Affairs of India clangs loudly in the empty corridors of justice to further echo the quiet of the media war mongers of India on the Gang Rape of the Nepali Women on the Indian Soil, by the Saudi Arabian First Secretary in New Delhi, Majed Hassan Ashoor. Please remember his name is Majed Hassan Ashoor! And as the offence at hand is not a petty crime– it is rape, sexual abuse, sodomy and abetment of trafficking, in the country of Candle marches, charismatic leadership and committed talkathon Newscasters, this absence of affirmative voice or action has started to ring the death knell of India’s supposed new avatar of muscular foreign policy.
The victims are also very silent; Nepal has not shaken and stirred the world about this and very soon using this convenient silence, the story will be put to sleep in some seventh page of the newspapers soon till it reaches its obituary column.
Facts will shout in support of the silence, that the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961, grants complete immunity to the officer and his family, including for heinous crimes and human rights violations, that India cannot violate a convention it has been a part of, along with more than 187 countries of the world, and where there is also a realistic fear of the safety of Indian diplomats and migrants in Saudi Arabia being jeopardised. And all this, in addition to the business sense, that prevents India from getting on the wrong side of the Oil rich Saudi Arabia.
The Facts bind no doubt, but that is where a smart and savvy leadership can liberate the shackles of diplomatic dilemma with assertive pressure on the Saudi Arabian Govt. And it has been done before, after being suitably pressurised by the US govt, a senior Georgian diplomat was stripped of his immunity by his government after he killed a 16-year-old American girl while driving under influence in America in 1997. A will will find a way!
Nepal may not be as rich as the Saudi Kingdom or as important to India strategically, to contain the funding to Pakistan by Saudi Arabia, but some things go much beyond the profit and loss statements and should be placed higher than the rising graphs of the foreign equity flowing from the gulf; the trust of thousands of the Nepali women who seek shelter under our sovereign promise of protection, to back our strong words about our commitment to never again have a Nirbhaya on the streets of India, with strong action and last but not the least, because nobody, no bully should be allowed to get away with such sick trail of devastating human lives that erodes the confidence on the natural justice.
Strength of the country is not just in its GDP but in the confidence of its citizens on the fairness and equality of justice there. Gang rape in India is considered rarest of the rare and can attract a maximum penalty of capital punishment. India needs to book its place on the table of negotiation with Saudi Arabia and make a case for revoking the diplomatic immunity of the accused, send him back to India for the case, including of his family members, who had the audacity to assault the Indian police force while on duty of investigating this case or at the least declare them all persona non grata. People of the country are watching, talk tough, act tough, the case studies of Vienna convention and the cries of rules preventing instant justice is so UPA style. What is muscular about our foreign policy now if the same weak defence of law taking its own 7 course meal of rules and regulations is to be dished out? If there is a case crying out for Humanitarian grounds overtaking set procedures, it is this Ms. External Affairs Minister!
And for the world powers, in the times of today when we are moving towards all being the global citizens, maybe it is time to have a re look at the Vienna convention of 1961 also- these rules were meant to protect the diplomats but not to iron clad them in such a manner that they can hammer the humanity out of shape.
Modi Government Cuts Budget Of Crucial Sectors: Social Pensions, Education, Health And More
The National Social Assistance Programme, which came into effect from 1995, aims to provide small amounts of social pensions to all those who are below the poverty line and above 60 years of age, and to the widows and the disabled. The programme has over 2.7 crore registered beneficiaries and enables the elderly poor to afford food and basic medication.
However, the centre’s contribution per pensioner has remained stagnated at a meagre Rs 200-300/month since 2006. In addition to this, the respective states add their own contribution, and thus the actual pension value varies from state to state.
With the central government slashing the social sector allocation in January, these schemes were the worst hit. The budget for social pensions was revised from Rs 10,500 crore to Rs 7187 crore. Following the cut, the Ministry of Rural Development failed to allocate money for pensions in time to states, creating a deficit of more than Rs 2,000 crore at the state level. Consequently, several elderly beneficiaries of the scheme did not receive their pensions for several months.
A few other sectors where the budget was revised in the middle of the fiscal year are listed below:
Child education and health:
The Union Budget for 2015-16 cut the net spending on child education, development, health and protection from about Rs 81,075 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 57,919 crore in 2015-16.
• Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS): Declined from Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 8,000 crore.
• Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS): Increased by Rs 2.23 crore.
• Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: Declined from Rs 28,000 crore to Rs 22,000 crore.
• Midday meal scheme: Declined from Rs 13,000 crore to Rs. 9,000 crore.
School and higher education:
The allocation for the education sector was slashed significantly by nearly 17% as compared to the Budget Estimates of 2014-15.
• Department of School Education: Declined from Rs 55,000 crore to 42,210 crore.
• Department of Higher Education: Declined by 800 crore.
Defence:
The capital budget for the army, navy and the air force was cut by about Rs 13,000 crore, and “re-appropriated” for revenue expenditure. Capital expenditure goes into buying and modernising equipment and weapons, while revenue expenditure goes mostly into payment of salaries and pensions.
Agriculture and rural development:
• Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana: Declined from Rs 9,864 crore to Rs. 4,500 crore.
• National Rural Drinking Water Program: Declined from Rs 11,000 crore to Rs 3,600 crore.

YFFP Organizes Dialogue with Pakistan High Commissioner: Indo-Pak Relations Post Ufa
10th September, 2015, New Delhi – Youth Forum on Foreign Policy, an independent and non-partisan initiative instituted to promote substantive dialogue on India’s foreign policy amongst the youth, organized an interactive session with the High Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr. Abdul Basit, on 9th September as part of its Embassy Dialogue Series.
The dialogue was held at the Pakistan High Commission, New Delhi. The audience comprised of influential stakeholders in foreign policy, including Mr. Gaurav Gogoi, Member of Parliament and co-founder at YFFP, representatives from the embassies of Poland, Belgium, Singapore and Sweden, as well as representatives from institutions such as Brookings. Students and professors across various disciplines and colleges in Delhi were invited to attend the event after extensive short listing. After a short introductory speech by Mr. Gogoi, Mr. Abdul Basit was invited to the dais to address the audience on India – Pakistan relations post the summit in Ufa.

Mr. Basit initiated the interactive dialogue by dichotomizing the terms ‘foreign policy’ and ‘diplomacy’, and went on to provide an overview of India-Pakistan relations.
Mr. Basit attributed the prevalence of Indo-Pak animosities to historical and geographical reasons, and said that the issue of Jammu and Kashmir continues to be at its forefront. Mr. Basit further pointed out how both India and Pakistan have become victims of their own rhetoric and negative propaganda, and emphasized the need to foster greater understanding through non-dogmatic educational approaches. Misrepresentation of ground realities is a serious problem which demands to be addressed.
To quote Mr. Basit, “We must rid ourselves of historical animosity which continues to bedevil our relationship.” He also said that it is essential to capitalize on the increasing opportunities that globalization offers to both nations. The youth are better equipped to create a sustained difference to this relationship. Sovereign equality and mutual respect will lay the premise for a new beginning.
Mr. Basit concluded his speech with a Swedish proverb, “If you wish to sing, you will always find a song.” The floor was then opened to questions. These questions addressed issues such as climate change and the pressing issue of water conservation as determinants of the Indo-Pak Relationship, how Pakistan perceives India as a nation, as well as steps to be taken to break the stalemate between the two countries.

The question-answer session was followed by High Tea, where Mr. Basit was available for further interaction. The guests enjoyed refreshments and informal interactions, and were given souvenirs by the High Commissioner.
The event was exceptionally well-received, and accomplished its chief motive: to engage the youth in an open discussion about one of the most contentious relationships in the contemporary political scenario, and to reinstate faith in the fact that normalization of Indo-Pak relations is, in fact, a positive possibility if pursued relentlessly.

Left In Orphanage By Father, Journey Of Jyothi Reddy From Farm Labourer To IT Firm’s CEO
We do surrender at those breaking points where there is hardly any chance to move ahead. Still continuous persistence cannot stop a human being from becoming what he/she wants to achieve in life. This has been proved by Mrs. Jyothi Reddy with her amazing journey from a field laborer to the CEO of Key Software Solutions in the US. She carries a great vision to change the lives of many women in rural India.
Before we take you to the success story of hers, we should travel in the time when she was struggling to make something big. Jyothi was the second of five siblings of a poor family. Having lost her mother early in life, she was put in an orphanage so that she could get some education. She passed Class X in first division but extreme poverty forced her to discontinue her studies and work in the fields.
At 16, she was forcibly married off to a man who was 10 years elder than her, and in the next two years she became the mother of two children. Destitute poverty made her restless and she searched for various jobs. After having 2 children, the situation became even worse as she had to work in the fields for a daily wage of Rs. 5 to take care of her children. These situations made her even stronger to stand and fight for life. In 1988, she joined as adult education teacher at a remuneration of Rs 120 a month. “In those days, Rs 120 was a lot of money for me. I could at least buy fruit and milk for my children. Next, I worked as a National Service Volunteer for Rs 200 a month,” she said. But the money she was making was not sufficient to run the family. She used to stitch petticoats at night to make more money. Despite her hsband’s disapproval she moved out of the village Mailaran with her children and went to Hanamkonda town. She learned typewriting and joined a craft course. Apart from her bad financial situation, she also had to fight with family and society to do what she wanted to do. She obtained the degree of BA from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University in 1994 and studied for a postgraduate degree from the Kakatiya University on weekends and obtained it in 1997. This made her get a special teacher job for a salary of Rs. 398 per month. She used to travel for two hours to reach her school. She utilized this time to sell sarees to her co-passengers which helped in gaining some extra income. Her struggle for life made her become conscious about the time and it showed her the ways to utilize the time available.
As per the statement published in The Times Of India, she said that she secured a job as the librarian at Janasikshana Nilayam and joined an open school where she would go every Sunday to continue with the studies.
“In 1992, I got an 18-month job as a special teacher at Ameenpet, 70 km from Warangal. The journey would cost me more than my salary. I used to sell sarees in the train every day to earn the extra money. Finally I got a regular job in 1994 at a monthly salary of Rs 2,750. I worked as mandal girl child development officer and would inspect the schools,” she said.
When Jyothi saw her cousin, who had come down from the US to Warangal in 98, she wondered about the difference in their lifestyles and decided to learn software courses like them in order to make better fortunes in the US. She went to US by leaving her two daughters in a missionary hostel.
“My next step was to learn software from VCL Computers in Hyderabad. I took a long leave from the office, got my passport and H1 visa ready and in 2000 I went to the US, where my husband’s cousin was. I took a job in a shop earning $60 for a 12-hour job and stayed as a paying guest with a Gujarati family,” she said.
Entry Into The World Of Dreams
Her initial start in the US was a period marked with struggles. She had to work in a gas station, work as a baby sitter, load/unload goods and work at a video shop for her survival. She then joined a company called CS America as a recruiter with an aid of a close relative. Later she got another offer from a different company, but it did not stay and she had to go back to babysitting and gas station for survival. That was the beginning of her entrepreneurial dreams.
“Then a contact in the US asked me to join as a software recruiter. Though I wasn’t fluent in English then, I overcame all challenges and gradually started my own company,” she said.
She wanted to start her own business and was looking for the suitable line of business to start.
Philanthropic Work
With her children settled in the US, she has planned to start her dream project which will provide placement to more than 1000 youths and to start a school from LKG to PG. She makes a point on her birthday to come to India and celebrate it in orphanages in Warangal. She also sponsors a mentally challenged kids’ home where there are 220 children. In this direction, she had joined hands with other like-minded NGOs Prajadharana Welfare Society, MV Foundation and Child Rights Advocacy Forum (CRAF) and formed a Pressure Group Force for Orphan Rights and Community Empowerment (FORCE).
Her perseverance will continue to linger for years to come and will act as the guiding light for not only women but anyone who wants to big despite poverty. From the fields of Warangal, where she used to earn Rs 5 per day, to becoming the CEO of a software company in the US, it has been a long journey for D Anila Jyothi Reddy

89 dead, Over 100 injured In Deadly Cylinder Blast In Jhabua, MP
At least 89 people were killed at a restaurant in Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh on Saturday when a cooking gas cylinder exploded and triggered a second blast of mine detonators stored illegally nearby. The blast ripped through a crowded area in Petlwad town in Jhabua district.The blast, triggered by mining explosives, took place in a godown where gelatine sticks were being stored.
The blast occurred at 8.30am. The restaurant, located next to the main bus station in the town of Petlawad in Madhya Pradesh state, was crowded with people having breakfast when the blasts occurred.
The building where the restaurant was located and an adjacent building were destroyed in the explosions, and motorbikes outside the restaurant were flattened, said Mewa Lal Gond, a police inspector in the mining district of Jhabua, where Petlawad is located as reported by ABC News.
Among the victims were a large number of labourers who were waiting in area for their daily work. Besides some people going to Gujarat were also standing near the hotel for tea and snacks and majority of them were either killed or injured in the blast, a police official said as reported by Firstpost.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured. The explosive materials are used by miners for blasting operations or for digging wells. There are several manganese and bauxite mines in Jhabua district, and many mine workers are hired on contract from Petlawad and nearby areas.

The incident took place in hotel Taj Dwarka. Reportedly, hotel staffs tried to stop her from leaving the hotel because she refused to pay the bills for items she broke inside her room.
Would the channels now play this video in Loop? Molestation of so many men by a woman? The same woman filed a molestation and sexual assault case few months ago and accused some unidentified people in her room of having touched her inappropriately and outraging her modesty. Cops Found out later no one entered her room. Few months before that too she had accused some businessmen brothers of having abused and molested her. These cases add to the statistics of “crime against women” even if in reality the case actually might be of crime by a woman! Let’s see if media shows this.

How did I get quick success in my life?
In this world without hard work you can’t achieve anything and that you get when the time comes, it needs a lot of patience.
Today some young men came to my house and they told me that they are doing their best but are not getting any success. How did I get quick success in my life?
I smiled in my head on this naive question. I went in and fetched a newspaper (India today) dated 18 years back. I asked them to read one article. It was about me running free classes for poor children for about five years till then. So now it has been 23 years I have been doing it.
I hope all of us got the message.

I was never one of those lucky people who found their things back in case they lost something. I work at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and was carrying equipment for a video shoot today. Half an hour after I reached college, I realised that the tripod for camera was missing. I also realised that I was in such a hurry in the morning that I never got a good glimpse of the driver who drove me to work and did not even remember his vehicle number. Now tripod is not an inexpensive equipment and I had given up all hope of getting it back. After an hour I decided to go to the security gate and enquire if by any chance, someone came to return it.
To my joy and surprise, the guards at the gate handed me my tripod and told me that an auto rickshaw driver dropped it off earlier. He had also left his number. I called him to thank him and requested if I could meet him later.
Over a cup of chai (tea) I learnt that Mr Manik Khandage has been driving auto rickshaw since 1983 and lives very near to TISS. After he dropped me, he said he was concerned because in the back seat he could hear 'khad-khad' (sound that the tripod must have made when it brushed against the auto frame). He said that when he actually discovered the tripod, he left the customer he was with at the moment in another auto and rushed to TISS to return it. "As I didn't know your name or where you worked, I thought best place to leave it was with the security guard", Mr Manik told me.
Maybe tripod is not a very valuable for others, but for me it is a part of my bread and butter. I would have been easily out of work for at least a couple of weeks without it. Thank you Mr Manik and all the other people who go out of their way and help us realise that world is indeed a good place.
